President's Letter
Spring is
here! Most of us have traded our skis for biking, hiking,
golfing, fishing and garden tools. It was a great year,
starting with the Open House and ending with the Dinner
Dance, with lots of skiing in between.
May 1st started my official term as President of the
Meriden Ski Club. I look forward to working with the Board
of Directors and chairpersons chosen to guide this great
club. Over the summer the Board of Directors will be
setting the calendar of events for the 2009/2010 season,
beginning with an evening at a Rock Cats baseball game, a
fishing trip, mini golf, go kart races and a picnic. Let me
say here that any member who desires to run or suggest an
event is more than welcome to present it to the Board of
Directors. All ideas will be considered. Don't be shy!
I want to congratulate Jane Fowler for becoming the
new recording secretary of the Meriden Ski Club and Sandra
Davis as a new Director. These two individuals will bring a
lot of new and fresh ideas to the club.
The Board of Directors will be discussing the
modification of our weekly meetings for the fall and winter.
We will also be considering holding off the bookings of week
long trips until Sept. or Oct., so as not to run into some
of the same problems encountered last year, ie. not enough
member participation, baggage fees, fuel charges, etc.
I wish every member a safe and happy summer and look
forward to seeing many new and familiar faces at our
meetings.
~ Marge Hayden

LET'S GO TUBING LET'S GO
TUBING LET'S GO TUBING
Don Simmonds, one of the Ski Instructors for the Meriden
Ski Club, and his wife Joanne go rafting every year and
have invited the Meriden Ski Club to participate.
WHERE: Deerfield River in Massachusetts
WHEN: Saturday, July 11, 2009 10:00am
DETAILS: We'll meet at the rest area on Rt. 2 W just
passed the town of Charlemont, MA. The rest area is on
the left after the Rt. 2/8A intersection. Turn into the
parking lot and drive over to the far right. That's our
meeting spot.
Bring your own tube if you have one. If you don't have
one, tubes may be available (no guarantee) for rent from
some homes on the drive up to the drop-in spot on the
river. It's best to have your own, cheap river tubes can
be found at many discout stores. We usually bring our
own food and drink picnic afterwards too.
The rapids on the river are mainly class 2 with a
class 3 thrown in for thrills. The length of the tubing
trip (time on water) is approximately 4 hours. We get
out of the river at the rest area where we parked our
vehicles. If you aren't so crazy about tubing, the rest
area is a nice place to spend the afternoon. It's real
close to the river and a wonderful picnic spot. And
since we're on our own here, trucks and large occupancy
vehicles are needed.
DIRECTIONS: Rt. 91 North to exit 26 in Greenfield, MA.
Follow Rt. 2 West to Charlemont, rest area is down
yonder on left.
