From the Editor....
Dear Member,
Summer is here, so bring on the heat!! We are planning and
plotting the ski season while you are all basking in the sun,
weeding the garden, biking the trails, or just lazing around.
Check out our schedule so far, and let us know if you have any
suggestions for a snow packed winter!!
Note: Deadline for September newsletter is August, 2009

President's Letter
Finally some sunshine!! The past six weeks
have been like living in the humid tropics. In spite of the
overcast and rainy days our first three summer events, the
rock cats ball game, the Black Hawk fishing trip, and Go Cart
Racing went off without a hitch.
After many years of chairing the mini golf tournament, Donna
Fowler is stepping down this year with the hope that another
member will take on the responsibility for organizing this
fun-filled event. Thank you, Donna and Bob, for some great
times by the pool!! Anyone interested in chairing this
or a new untried program is invited to contact me or any of
the officers/directors of the MSC.
This newsletter will be the last for this membership year. The
new membership year starts September 1, 2009. At that time the
awareness days and bulk ticket information will be available
as well as the Open House date.
The Board of Directors are at work to responsibly reduce the
surplus funds in the treasury back to member benefits. As a
first step in this process, the price for a seat on the bus
trips has been reduced to $15.00 with the first two buses in
December reduced to $10.00. The second benefit distribution is
a reduction in the member's Mount Southington lift voucher
discount to $15.00 each for those vouches left over from last
season. An extension of this benefit may include future
voucher purchases through the season, pending a decision of
the Board of Directors. Other options for enhancing events
and trips are also being considered.
I wish everyone a happy and safe summer season. I am looking
forward to my term as your President.
~ Marge Hayden

SUMMER MEETING
ELIMINATION
The regular summer meeting schedule has been eliminated
from May 1 thru August 31, 2009. Those of you planning to
participate in the summer programs are asked to contact the
event chairperson directly of your intent to participate and
send necessary deposits and/or fees required to the
chairperson or the MSC post office box address listed on the
web site.
AMBASSADOR
The MSC is looking for an Ambassador for
this coming season to represent the MSC at the CT Council
Snowball and On Snow weekend. This position grants
many benefits, such as tickets and hotel accomodations at
the Snowball and a free seat on all Sunday Bus Trips. It
does require that the ambassador run an activity, which is
a great way to get to know other members and get a peak
into some of the club's and council's activities. This
could be a great opportunity for any male or female, young
or old, new or veteran member!! Please contact any member
of the board for more info.
ACTIVITIES
Calling all leaders!! Calling all leaders!!
The MSC is looking for people to help run acitivities
this summer and during the ski season. We have seen a
few new faces with great ideas and contributions to
our club and its activities, but we would like to see
more! Please contact the board if you are interested
in leading or helping with the following events:
** Mini Golf ** Summer Picnic ** Holiday
Party ** Ski Trips ** Your idea **
BTW - Leading an activity or event is great for your
resume!!! This is great experience that can be
applied to your job, and a great topic for a job
interview!! Gain experience that can be carried over
to your job! If you can manage crazy ski lovers in an
activity, or organize a function, you can manage
people or projects at work! So get involved!!
The skies cleared on Saturday June 27 for our
2nd Annual Fishing trip, and several folks went home with
fillets of blue and bass. Dave Riter cashed in by catching
the biggest fish of the day, an $83.00 winning for the
treasurer! Click on the link below to see our joint
commercial for the MSC and Blackhawk Fishing, starring Dave
and Sandy Davis (not to mention my son and others in the
background)!!
L-R: Michael Riter, Dave Riter,
Stephanie Riter & Stephanie's boyfriend Joel Solimine.
Dave is holding the prize winning striped
bass, and Stephanie caught the bluefish she's holding.
GO CART RACING

With gloves on, helmets on and seatbelts
secured, the MSC Go Cart Race skidded over the finish line
this past Tuesday, with Greg Crocket and Marie Block as our
fastest male and female racers! There were 24 members and
guests, defying speed limits and centrifugal forces through
hairpin turns and straightaways. The first heat narrowed
the field to 10 top speed racers, pitted against each other
in the 2nd heat. The slower racers were given a consolation
round to console their bruised egos. If your heart ain't
beatin', you ain't alive! Thanks Sandy for a thrilling
evening of speed and competition!! Is Lime Rock next??

Recipe Corner...
Hi Tanya, I found this
in a cooking light magazine and made it. It is REALLY good and
goes well with grilled chicken, pork or fish. It can also be
used as a topping for grilled bread or a dip for toasted
tortilla wedges. ~ Marge Hayden
NECTARINE AND RADISH SALSA
2 1/4 cups (1/4 inch) diced nectarines
1 1/2 cups radishes, halved lengthwise & thinly sliced
1/2 cup chopped cucumber
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
1 Tbs fresh lime juice
2 tsp chopped fresh cilantro (can be ommited or use
fresh parsley)
1 1/2 tsp sugar
1/4 tsp salt
Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl; toss well. Let salsa
mixture stand 30 minutes. Yields about 4 cups. Enjoy!!

I contemplated whether or not to give out my secret recipe for
Texas Caviar that I have brought to the tail gate picnic the
last couple of years. People came up to me while we were
cleaning up after the picnic and told me how much they liked
it. I think they were stalking the table to see who would
claim the empty bowl, and then moved in get a hint of the
ingredients. Well, here it is...it's a great appetizer,
especially for summer picnics, and could even double as a bean
salad. Mix it up the day before and enjoy! ~ Tanya Marks.
TEXAS CAVIAR
1 1/3 cups olive oil
1 1/3 cups apple cider vinegar
3/4 cup sugar
1 can of White Shoepeg Corn
1 can of Black Eyed Peas
1 can of Black Beans
12 fresh or jarred jalapeno slices, diced (to your preference
or to taste)
1 medium onion - diced
1 small jar of pimentos - diced
4 celery stalks - diced
Mix oil, vinegar & sugar in a bowl and heat in microwave until
sugar is melted (I do 1-2 minutes at 50% power level). Stir.
In meantime, drain and rinse beans and corn.
Mix all ingredients together and stir well. Refrigerate over
night, stirring occasionally. Drain before serving. Serve
with nacho chips or scoops.
