Ski Club Newsletter
Dear Member,
A letter from the Editor
I have to say that I am jealous. Jealous that millions of young
Americans turned off their ipods and cell phones, shut down their
computers and playstations, even if just for a little while,
to line up at polling stations and vote in a historical
presidential election this past Tuesday. And the MSC is just
looking for a few fresh faces, not millions, to help run our great
ski club, create ideas for trips or activities, and to help out
any way they can. The MSC is first, a skiing and riding club, and
second, a social club. We don't want to be a "cyber club", paying
dues for a few discounts, then staying at home until the skis hit
the slopes. Get down to a meeting and get involved, run a trip or
activity, race on Mondays. Meet new friends or marry a fellow
member like I did! Better yet, run for an office next spring.
Tuesday's election had a "Yes we can" attitude and proved we can
get together and make a difference. I say to you, about getting
involved and making a difference in the Meriden Ski Club... Yes
you can!!!!
See you next Thursday!! Tanya Marks
Note: Deadline for October newsletter is Nov 30, 2008

President's
Letter
Would you believe that two New England resorts opened trails
for skiing and boarding over the Holloween week-end? Well,
it's a fact. Killington has eight trails and two lifts open.
It looks as though the Thanksgiving week-end will offer
several options for skiing and boarding. The time is now to
get your equipment conditioned for your first trip.
I have to congratulate Bob Fowler, his assistants, the vendors
who attended and provided items for the drawings and all of
those members and not yet members that took part in a very
successful Open House this past week. Attendance was over 300
with extactly 100 of those signing up as members and receiving
membership cards on the spot. I would be remiss if I didn't
specifically thank Membership Chairman Don Comstock and Diane
Foell who made the process so quick and smooth.
Web Master Don Comstock has also fashioned a link on our web
site called SkiHitch. This is brand new and affords members
the opportunity to hook-up for rides to ski areas or to
provide a ride for others to travel with you. The designed
goal is to make travel more affordable by sharing fuel
expenses. An Idea whose time has come.
The social season is here. The Open House was the kick off to
be followed by the Spaghetti Supper on Nov 20th, a real fun
event with live music. The CSC Crystal Ball on Nov 22,
followed by the Meat Heads Film Festival on Dec 4th and
finally the Christmas Party on Dec 18th. There is certainly
something available for everyone.
I wish all of our members a happy, fun filled Thanksgiving
holiday with family and friends.
~ Russ

Ski Trips for 2008 - 2009 Season
Here is a preview of the ski trips that the MSC is running this
year. If you wish to run a trip, please contact any member of
the board for the "how to" and a trip proposal. We are looking
for someone to run a weekend bus trip as this
venue may be popular with rising gas prices.
Click on the links below to see or print details on these
trips. Please sign up now
for Western trips as these trips have early deadlines and
require minimum participants.
Champagne Powder
Steamboat is actually a complete mountain range: Mount
Werner, Sunshine Peak, Storm Peak, Thunderhead Peak, Pioneer
RidgeŽ and Christie Peak. 2,965 acres (1200 hectares) of
permitted terrain offer a diversity of trails for all levels
of ability. Mavericks Superpipe is a freerider's dream. Gladed
areas of Pioneer Ridge, Sunshine and Storm Peak are
Steamboat's particular claim to fame, with legendary
Champagne Powder snow in the trees for the most avid powder
hounds. Don't miss this great trip!!

Experience the Power of Four
With four choices and 5,303 acres, decide which mountain fits your
passion. Snowmass, so many runs, so much variety
- cruisers, steeps, glades, off-piste, terrain parks, superpipe
and the longest lift-served vertical rise in the United States.
Rising out of the heart of downtown Aspen and famous for its
steeps, bumps and incredible views, Aspen Mountain
and its double-black and tree runs are fun for skiers and
snowboarders alike. Known as the locals' favorite mountain,
Aspen Highlands features extreme terrain, groomed
cruisers and breathtaking views of the Maroon Bells. For the
ultimate ski/snowboarding experience, hike up and drop into
Highland Bowl. Home of the ESPN Winter X Games through 2010 (for
an unprecedented nine consecutive years!), Buttermilk
also remains North America's best family learning center. While
experts frolic in the X Superpipe and terrain park, the rest of
the family can cruise on the wide, rolling trails. See them for
yourself!!
